Birch launched in 2019 with the organic Birch mattress. Founded by Helix Sleep, Birch’s mission centered around producing an organic mattress with sustainably sourced materials. That mission has since expanded beyond mattresses to include an organic pillow and plush pillow top.
The company sources organic cotton, wool, and latex for each of its products. Birch provides full details regarding the origin of each material. The cotton is grown in the United States and is certified organic. The wool is sustainably sourced from New Zealand from free-range, pasture-fed sheep. The latex is harvested from Southeast Asia and is OEKO-TEX certified. These natural materials are durable, environmentally friendly, and sustainably produced.
Birch currently offers one mattress topper, which we take a closer look at in this review. Birch Plush Pillow Top Performance
The right mattress topper should feel comfortable and supportive. Chances are, you are shopping for a mattress topper to upgrade or improve the feel of your existing mattress. As such, it is important to take the following factors into consideration. We take a closer look at the support, conforming nature, temperature neutrality, and motion isolation of the Birch mattress topper to give you a better idea of how it performs.
What Type of Sleeper is Good for a Birch Plush Pillow Topper?
When choosing a mattress topper, it is important to consider your sleeping position and body weight. These factors can have an effect on how comfortable the mattress topper feels to you. The Birch Plush Pillow Top has a medium feel, with soft wool and responsive latex. These materials are ideal for most sleeping positions.
- Side Sleeper: For those who sleep on their side, the plush feel cushions the shoulders and hips, while the latex contours to the shape of your body for additional pressure point relief.
- Back Sleeper: When sleeping on your back, lumbar support is the most important. The support layer of the Birch mattress topper provides back support that keeps the spine aligned.
- Stomach Sleeper: When sleeping on your stomach, the latex prevents your hips from sinking in too far, while the plush pillow top should still feel soft enough for your chest. The table below outlines how the Birch mattress topper is rated based on sleeping position and body weight.
|Lightweight Sleepers (Less than 130lb)||Average-weight Sleepers (130-230lb)||Heavyweight Sleepers (More than 230lb)|
|Back Sleepers||Good||Very Good||Good|
|Stomach Sleepers||Fair||Very Good||Good|
Materials and Construction
The Birch mattress topper is handmade with sustainably sourced, organic materials. The company is transparent when it comes to its supply chain and certifications for all of the materials used to make the Birch mattress topper.
The Birch Plush Pillow Top is three inches thick with an organic cotton cover. The cover is soft with a little bit of stretch and a tufted design. The cotton wicks away moisture and dissipates heat. The comfort layer of the mattress topper is an inch of Birch wool, which acts as a natural flame retardant. This layer also regulates temperature and acts as insulation. The wool used is natural, organic, and sustainably sourced from farms in New Zealand. The elasticity of wool fibers allows this layer to retain its shape and increases the overall durability of the mattress topper. The support layer of the Birch Plush Pillow Top is 100% natural Talalay latex harvested from rubber trees in Southeast Asia. The soft latex is OEKO-TEX certified, so there is no off-gassing. Talalay latex is 7 times more breathable than other forms of latex. It also contours to the shape of your body and relieves pressure points. The pillow top is handmade in the United States.
How to Use Your Birch Topper
The Birch Plush Pillow Top is gently compressed, rolled, and shipped in a box. It is slightly heavier than the average mattress topper, so you may need assistance when it comes to moving or adjusting the topper. Put the mattress topper on top of your mattress and unroll it. The mattress topper does not have any straps to secure it to the mattress. The fitted sheet should keep it in place. Since the mattress topper is 3 inches thick, be sure that your fitted sheet has a deeper pocket to fit the height of your mattress and topper combined.
The cover of the Birch mattress topper is not removable. Due to the materials and construction, this mattress topper is spot clean only. To spot clean, use a damp cloth and mild detergent on the mattress topper and allow it to air dry. Do not oversaturate the mattress, and allow it to fully dry before putting the fitted sheet back on. Since the cover is not washable, it may be a good idea to use a mattress protector to prevent the mattress topper from getting stained.
