Tempur-Pedic Mattress Review

Learn more about our affiliate program here.Tempur-Pedic is a giant in the mattress industry. The company, now merged with Sealy, was behind the introduction and popularity of memory foam in mattresses.
Today, Tempur-Pedic is still going strong with a wide variety of product lines and models, all of which utilize memory foam to provide responsive, pressure-relieving support.
Tempur-Pedic has expanded beyond all-foam mattresses and has several hybrid models that support the memory foam comfort layer with an innerspring support core.
Because of the number of beds offered by Tempur-Pedic and the limited specifications that the company offers about the internal composition of each offering, keeping track of the options from this company can be a challenge. Furthermore, some retired Tempur-Pedic models may be re-sold by third party retailers on sites like eBay or Amazon.
In this review, we focus only on the mattresses currently being offered directly from Tempur-Pedic, and we’ll attempt to break down and simplify their product catalog to help you understand if Tempur-Pedic makes the right mattress for you.

Availability
All of these mattresses are available to purchase directly from Tempur-Pedic. Purchases can be made through the Tempur-Pedic website and over the phone.
Tempur-Pedic mattresses can be found at a huge number of brick-and-mortar stores. A list of places to find Tempur-Pedic beds in person is available on the company’s website.
It is important to note that terms for delivery, installation, sleep trial, and other service issues may be different if you purchase from another retailer rather than purchasing directly from Tempur-Pedic.
Some Tempur-Pedic mattresses are sold by the company on Amazon.
Be aware that on third party sites like Amazon there may be people who are re-selling Tempur-Pedic mattresses. In some cases, they are re-selling older models that are no longer being produced by Tempur-Pedic itself. This may affect your warranty and availability of service support from Tempur-Pedic.
Construction
To help more easily organize and understand the array of Tempur-Pedic mattress offerings, we break them down into two categories: all-foam mattresses and hybrid mattresses.
The all-foam options use several different foam layers to cultivate a specific feel. Central to this feel is the TEMPUR material itself, which is memory foam, also known as viscoelastic foam.
TEMPUR foam is used in the comfort layers of these mattresses. In some cases, the traditional, TEMPUR foam is used. In other cases, newer, modified versions are employed. While these may be named — such as TEMPUR-ES and TEMPUR-APR — there is little detail shared by Tempur-Pedic to clarify how these foams are different.
Tempur-Pedic treats this information about their foams as proprietary. They do the same with information about the density and thickness of each foam layer. As a result, it can be difficult to fully understand the construction of each Tempur-Pedic mattress.
Beneath the memory foam comfort layers, Tempur-Pedic uses one or more layers of polyfoam that works to stabilize the memory foam and provide a support core.
The Tempur-Pedic all-foam mattress offerings include:
- TEMPUR-Adapt
- TEMPUR-ProAdapt
- TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt
- TEMPUR-Contour Elite
- TEMPUR-Contour Elite Breeze
- TEMPUR-Contour Rhapsody Luxe
- TEMPUR-Cloud Elite
- TEMPUR-Cloud Luxe
- TEMPUR-Cloud Luxe Breeze
- TEMPUR-Cloud Supreme Breeze
- TEMPUR-Cloud Prima
- TEMPUR-Legacy
- The GrandBed
The hybrid mattresses from Tempur-Pedic utilize TEMPUR foams in their comfort layers. As with the all-foam models, specifications for the type, density, and thickness of the foams can be vague or non-existent.
What sets the hybrid models apart is that their support core is formed with innerspring coils. These coils generally have a thin layer of polyfoam underneath them to provide additional stability.
The Tempur-Pedic hybrid models include:
- TEMPUR-Adapt Hybrid
- TEMPUR-ProAdapt Hybrid
- TEMPUR-Flex Elite
- TEMPUR-Flex Supreme
- TEMPUR-Flex Supreme Breeze
Both the all-foam and the hybrid mattresses usually have a polyester cover. These may be labeled SmartClimate or with other terms referring to their ability to stay cool; however, details of the cooling properties are limited.
For many Tempur-Pedic mattresses, the cover is zippered and can be removed to be washed.
Shipping
If you order a mattress directly from Tempur-Pedic, the company is currently offering free delivery and in-home installation to the contiguous 48 states.
This white glove service includes haul-away of an old mattress and/or box spring.
If you live in Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, or some remote areas of the U.S., there may be a $600 fee for shipping and installation.
Additional Services
If you purchase additional items from Tempur-Pedic, such as an adjustable frame, at the same time as your mattress, white glove delivery will include installation of all of these items in the room of your choosing.
Sleep Trial
Mattress purchases directly from Tempur-Pedic come with a 90-night sleep trial. You must keep the mattress for 30 nights before you can initiate a return.
If you received free shipping, Tempur-Pedic deducts $175 from your refund as a return shipping fee if you decide that you do not want to keep the mattress.
Warranty
The Tempur-Pedic mattresses come with a 10-year warranty. If the mattress has a covered defect, the company will repair or replace it; however, the customer is responsible for any transportation costs related to a warranty claim.
Tempur-Pedic Performance
Motion Isolation
Top-notch motion isolation is a hallmark trait of the TEMPUR foam used in these mattresses. The material excels at compressing only where weight is applied, and then it slowly retakes its original shape when pressure is removed. As a result, very little motion is transferred on Tempur-Pedic beds.
Edge Support
Edge support is below average on Tempur-Pedic mattresses. The same compression and limited bounce that promote motion isolation are the cause of this weakness around the edge.
The significant compression at the edge, especially when sitting on the bed, is most noticeable on the softer mattress models. The issue is worse for people who have higher-than-average body weight.
The hybrid mattresses have slightly more edge support as a result of the innerspring support core.
Heat Retention
Sleeping hot is a well-established issue for Tempur-Pedic mattresses. TEMPUR foam retains heat and softens as it warms up. This means that you sink further into the bed, restricting the airflow that could help cool your skin. The softer the mattress model, the more that airflow is prone to be reduced.
Some of the Tempur-Pedic mattresses, such as the Breeze models, have components designed to permit more airflow and reduce heat retention.
Overall, people with a tendency to sleep hot should take caution with Tempur-Pedic mattresses, especially those with a softer feel.
Off-Gassing
When brand new, memory foam gives off a noticeable odor. This smell is not long-lasting and should be gone within a few hours. Though rare, the smell can last up to a few days.
Support
Tempur-Pedic mattresses provide considerable support. Because of the way that TEMPUR foam can adapt to the distribution of each sleeper’s body weight, it is very effective at relieving pressure points and promoting spinal alignment.
Conforming
TEMPUR foam closely hugs the body. The models with a softer firmness level will have even more conforming.
For some sleepers, this conforming is just right and keeps the body aligned. However, for others, there can be too much conforming, causing them to sink too deeply into the mattress and even feel stuck in the bed.
Durability
Tempur-Pedic mattresses have well above-average durability. Despite not disclosing details about their foams, the track record of Tempur-Pedic foams supports their longevity.
Sex
TEMPUR foam is not the optimal material for sex. The amount of sink coupled with the slower bounce-back of the foam can make it tricky to quickly move on top of the bed.
The softer Tempur-Pedic mattresses with exaggerated contouring and hug are more prone to inhibiting sexual activity.

What Type of Sleeper is Suited to a Tempur-Pedic Mattress?
If you want to know if a Tempur-Pedic mattress might be right for you, a good starting point is to think about your primary sleeping position and your weight. While these aren’t the be-all, end-all for picking a mattress, they can help guide you to what is likely to be a good fit.

Side Sleepers
Side sleepers have pronounced pressure points at the shoulders and the hips. Mattresses with lots of responsiveness, such as memory foam mattresses, often work well for side sleepers because they can give extra cushioning to these areas of the body.
If a mattress is too firm, it can create too much impact with a side sleeper’s pressure points and lead to pain. For this reason, a softer to medium-firm mattress works best for most people in this position.
Side sleepers who weigh under 130 pounds may experience worse impact at pressure points on a firm mattress, and side sleepers over 230 pounds may find that they sink too deeply into a softer bed.
The following table outlines how well each of the Tempur-Pedic mattresses are likely to work for side sleepers of different weights. Note that the TEMPUR-ProAdapt and the TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt come with multiple firmness choices.

Back Sleepers
Back sleepers can benefit from a responsive material like memory foam because it can offer more support to the pelvis and torso where most people carry more weight.
At the same time, too much contouring or plushness can cause these parts of the body to sink too far, leading to a hyperextension of the spine. As a general principle, back sleepers do best with a bed that is firm yet responsive.
Back sleepers who weigh over 230 pounds are much more likely to have issues with sinking too much into a mattress than those who weigh under 130 pounds.
Many of the Tempur-Pedic models are far too soft for back sleepers. Firmer options, such as the TEMPUR-Contour product line and the TEMPUR-ProAdapt and TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt mattresses are the best bet for people who prefer this sleeping position.

Stomach Sleepers
Firmer mattresses are normally the best choice for stomach sleepers because they can resist the pronounced sinking of the abdomen that can occur on a plush mattress.
If the abdomen sinks into the mattress, it can become misaligned with the torso and hips. If the shoulders sink too much, it can misalign the neck. And if the face sinks too much, it can make it harder for a person to comfortably breathe in this sleeping position.
All of these issues have greater potential to occur for stomach sleepers who weigh over 230 pounds and cause them to place a higher priority on finding a firmer bed. Stomach sleepers lighter than 130 pounds may be able to find comfort and support from a mattress with less firmness.
This table lists how well the Tempur-Pedic mattresses fit for stomach sleepers of each general weight group. Very few of these mattresses are great options for average weight or heavier stomach sleepers.

Our Verdict
There’s no doubting that Tempur-Pedic offers some of the most well-known, high-quality, and best-reviewed memory foam beds on the market. For people who want significant contouring for pressure point relief, the performance of the Tempur-Pedic mattresses are a great fit.
In addition, Tempur-Pedic has a huge range of product lines and bed options to choose from, allowing each sleeper to find the one that best suits their needs.
On the flip side, this abundance of options can be a challenge for customers who may feel overwhelmed by all the choices. This can be exacerbated by the ambiguity in the company’s descriptions and specifications for each mattress.
The price point of the Tempur-Pedic beds far surpasses that of most other comparable mattresses sold online. Especially for Queen and King size beds, the price for one Tempur-Pedic bed can range into several thousands of dollars.
From a performance standpoint, Tempur-Pedic mattresses can pose issues for sleepers over 230 pounds, for people who tend to sleep hot, for people who want edge support, and for those who want a mattress that is optimal for sex.
