Puffy offers two mattresses: the original Puffy Mattress and the Puffy Lux. For the purpose of this review, we will be focusing on the original Puffy mattress.
The mattress utilizes a thick layer of gel-infused memory foam as the comfort layer. Memory foam provides a contouring sleeping surface that promotes spinal alignment while delivering excellent comfort as well. The mattress also includes a ClimateComfort foam layer that keeps the bed consistent regardless of the temperature.
Puffy offers a 101-night sleep trial without a required break-in period. This lets you try out the mattress in the short term, and a lifetime warranty protects your investment over the long-term.

Puffy Mattress Performance
Motion Isolation
Motion isolation is very good in the Puffy. The mattress uses memory foam in the comfort layer, and this material excels at limiting motion transfer from one part of the bed to another.
Edge Support
Edge support is average at-best for the original mattress from Puffy. Because of memory foam’s responsiveness and its slower rate of regaining its shape, the edge of the mattress is prone to compress.
This level of edge support is generally not a problem when lying near the exterior of the mattress. The compression of the foams is instead most pronounced when sitting on the edge of the bed.
Heat Retention
Memory foam can build up heat and may not be the best fit for people who have a strong tendency toward sleeping hot. Puffy does include graphite-gel interspersed within the foam to reduce the amount of heat retention.
Off-Gassing
Some initial odor is to be expected with the Puffy, but this smell will not last more than a few hours or a few days at the longest.
Support
Support from these mattresses is excellent. The mattress has thick layers of memory foam that can compress in ways that give extra cushioning to the heavier parts of the body such as the hips and shoulders. This responsiveness helps keep your body and spine aligned to avoid aches and pains.
Conforming
Memory foam provides significant contouring. As it cushions the body proportionally to where weight is applied, it gives a feeling of hugging the body. This boosts the support and comfort of the Puffy mattresses.
Durability
The Puffy mattresses have not been on the market long enough to have data about their durability over many years.
Puffy does not publish information about the density of their foams, and density can impact the longevity of foam materials.
A benefit for the durability of the mattress is that it uses thicker layers of memory foam. This reduces the risk of extra pressure being placed on that foam or its supporting layers.
Overall, we anticipate the Puffy mattresses to have a similar useful life — of 6-8 years more — as comparable foam beds.
Sex
Because of the contouring of memory foam and its low level of bounce, movement on the Puffy mattresses can be more difficult.
In most cases, this will not interrupt sexual activity, but other mattress types, such as latex, tend to better facilitate motion and sex.

What Type of Sleeper is Suited to the Puffy Mattress?
The Puffy has a lot to offer. It is a well-designed mattress with thick layers of memory foam. However, no one mattress suits all sleepers. Instead, it’s important to consider whether a mattress is a good fit for you, and two central considerations are your sleeping position and your weight.
Side sleepers: Memory foam is a great choice for side sleepers because it can cushion the shoulders and hips in a way that encourages spinal alignment. The exception is that some side sleepers who weigh over 230 pounds will find this foam to be a bit too soft and have too much sink.
Back sleepers: Back sleepers can benefit from the responsiveness of memory foam, but in this sleeping position, a firmer mattress is typically the best choice. The risks of awkward bending of the spine or neck will be greater for back sleepers who weigh over 230 pounds.
Stomach sleepers: A firmer mattress is usually a wiser choice for stomach sleepers because too much contouring can feel suffocating and can disrupt the proper curvature of the spine. Stomach sleepers who are lighter and weigh under 130 pounds, though, may find the firmness and responsiveness of this mattress to be a good fit.
Under 130 lbs | 130-230 lbs | Above 230 lbs | |
---|---|---|---|
Side Sleepers | Very good | Very good | Good |
Back Sleepers | Good | Good | Fair |
Stomach Sleepers | Good | Fair | Poor |
Our Verdict
The original mattress from Puffy is designed simply and with high-performance materials. By using memory foam in the comfort layer, the original Puffy can provide excellent contouring and pressure point relief. For customers with back pain, this can offer welcome relief.
While some mattresses use only a thin layer of memory foam, the Puffy mattresses have thicker chunks of foam that enhance support and durability. This material delivers excellent motion isolation as well.
While the price of the Puffy may be higher than some all-foam mattresses, the company offers a lifetime warranty that provides peace of mind that this is a purchase that will provide significant return on your investment.
