Nolah Mattress Review 2021

Nolah Sleep’s product line includes two mattresses: the Nolah Original and the Nolah Signature.

A central selling point for both of these mattresses is the company’s AirFoam comfort layer. This AirFoam is a specialty polyfoam that has contouring properties similar to memory foam but without the same degree of sink or heat retention.

In addition, the Signature mattress boasts a dual-sided firmness design, providing 2 choices in one for people who may be unsure about exactly what comfort feel is right for them.

The Nolah Original mattress has a medium level of firmness that registers as a 5-6 on the typical firmness scale.

The Nolah Signature has a different firmness level on each side of the mattress. On one side, it is a medium (4-5), and on the other, it is firmer (6.5-7). By flipping the mattress, you can choose between a soft and firm feel.

Nolah mattresses are only available to purchase directly through the company’s website.

Both the Nolah Original and Nolah Signature utilize a specialty polyfoam that the company calls AirFoam. The company has designed this material to try to mimic the best elements of both memory foam and latex.

The specific layering of materials varies between the Original and the Signature.

Nolah Original

  1. The top layer is 2” of the Nolah AirFoam polyfoam.
  2. The second layer is 1” of a resilient latex-like polyfoam.
  3. The bottom layer is 7” of support polyfoam.

Nolah Signature

  1. The soft side has 2.5” of Nolah AirFoam.
  2. The next layer beneath that is 1.5” of a medium-soft polyfoam.
  3. The next layer is 7” of support polyfoam.
  4. The firm side has 1” of Nolah AirFoam.

The Nolah mattresses are delivered at no charge to addresses within the 48 contiguous states. Delivery generally requires 7 business days after an order has been placed.

No shipping is offered to Alaska or Hawaii.

Additional Services

Nolah does not provide any services relating to removal of an old mattress or installation of your Nolah mattress.

Nolah does offer services relating to charitable causes. Specifically, the company donates to an organization called Defenders of Wildlife for each mattress that is purchased.

When you buy a Nolah mattress, the company allows you to select which species you would like to protect. After purchasing, you will get an official adoption certificate for an animal of that species in the mail.

Sleep Trial

Once your Nolah mattress is delivered, you have 120 nights to test it out to see if you want to keep it. Nolah requires that you keep the mattress for 30 days, though, before initiating a return. If you want to return the bed, Nolah will cover any pickup or return shipping costs.

The Nolah Original comes with a 15-year warranty. If the mattress has a manufacturing or material defect, the company will repair or replace the mattress. In the event of a warranty claim, your responsibility will be a $75 shipping charge.

The Nolah Signature comes with a lifetime warranty. During the first 15 years, the company will repair or replace a defective mattress at no cost to you. During years 15-24, the company will repair or replace a mattress with a prorated cost of 50% of the purchase price plus a $75 shipping fee. In years 25 and on, the prorated replacement charge is 60% of the purchase price along with the $75 shipping fee.

Nolah Mattress Performance

Motion Isolation

Both the Nolah Original and Signature are above-average when it comes to motion isolation. Though some increase in motion transfer is detectable vis-a-vis a traditional memory foam mattress, the difference is minimal and unlikely to lead to nighttime disruptions from a partner’s movement.

Edge Support

There is no reinforcement of the foams around the edge of the mattress, so the foam will noticeably compress when you lie down or sit on the edge of the bed.

If you are using the Nolah Signature on the Firm side, there will be the least amount of compression because of how close the 7” layer of support foam is to the top of the mattress.

Heat Retention

The Nolah mattresses are good when it comes to temperature regulation.

The AirFoam designed by Nolah was made to try to help prevent the heat buildup associated with memory foam. While it does not retain heat to the same degree, the AirFoam can still feel too warm for some people who tend to sleep hot.

When brand new out of the box, the Nolah mattresses will have a light smell, but this will quickly dissipate — within hours or at most a day or two — as long as the bedroom is reasonably well-ventilated.

The Nolah AirFoam provides sufficient support to most sleepers. The foam has enough give to properly compress and bolster the body at its biggest pressure points. It has considerable bounce as well, making it easy to adjust your sleeping position and to prevent feeling like you are sleeping “in” rather than “on” the bed.

A potential concern with the Nolah mattresses is the thickness of the AirFoam layers. None of the comfort layers in these mattresses are greater than 2.5” thick. This may reduce the support for sleepers who weigh over 230 pounds or who have very severe pressure points.

The Nolah Original and Nolah Signature offer enough contouring from the AirFoam to provide a comfortable and responsive bed, but the amount of hug is not extensive. It is unlikely that you would feel that you are sinking into these mattresses.

The mattresses from Nolah have not been on the market long enough to have hard data about their performance over many years of use. However, based on the internal construction, these beds are expected to have similar durability as most foam mattresses.

The AirFoam in the comfort layer provides sufficient bounce to facilitate movement on top of the bed, including sex.

What Type of Sleeper is Suited to the Nolah Mattress?

Like all mattresses, the Nolah Original and Nolah Signature work better for some sleepers than others. To determine if one of these mattresses is likely to be a good fit for your needs, you can start by taking into account your sleeping position and your weight.

Side sleepers: if you sleep on your side and weigh under 230 pounds, you are likely to have a good experience with either the Nolah Original or the Signature. For some people under 130 pounds, the Original may feel too soft, and the firm side of the Signature may be a better match. Side sleepers who weigh over 230 pounds may find that the comfort layers are too thin to cushion their weight and pressure points.

Back sleepers: the Nolah Signature is usually a better choice for back sleepers, especially back sleepers who weigh under 230 pounds. The firm side of this model can give a feel that contours just enough without causing the body to sink out of alignment. Back sleepers over 230 pounds likely will not get enough support from either Nolah mattress.

Stomach sleepers: the Nolah Original is too soft for the majority of stomach sleepers, but the firm side of the Signature can provide the needed amount of comfort and responsiveness. Stomach sleepers over 230 pounds, though, may get insufficient support from the firm side’s comfort layer that is only 1” thick.

Our Verdict

Both the Nolah Original and Signature mattresses employ the company’s own AirFoam to offer a sleeping experience that captures many of the most-desired benefits of latex and memory foam.

The material can contour to the body, offering the cushioning needed to maintain spinal alignment through the night. At the same time, the bed keeps enough bounce and airflow to prevent issues with sleeping hot or interference with your sex life.

In the Signature mattress, the ability to flip the mattress to attain a different firmness feel provides meaningful flexibility, especially for back and stomach sleepers. People who weigh over 230 pounds, though, may find some issues with both the Original and Signature.

Most customers have expressed satisfaction with this mattress and with the company’s service. The Signature mattress is backed by a lifetime warranty that makes sure you’re covered if any part of the bed is defective.
