One of the first things people tend to look at in a mattress is how soft or firm it is. This is commonly described using a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being the firmest. Most people prefer a medium-firm mattress, which falls around a 6.5 out of 10.

Your preferred mattress firmness will depend on a variety of factors, most notably your body type and sleeping position. A mattress that feels firm to one person may feel too plush to another because of the way each person interacts differently with the layers of the mattress. Because it’s impossible to make a mattress that pleases everybody, many mattress companies offer more than one firmness option.

The Eco Terra mattress comes in two firmness options, a medium and a medium-firm. The difference is in the latex layer: the medium option uses latex with an indentation load deflection (ILD) of 24-26, and the medium-firm option uses latex with an ILD of 29-31.

The medium-firm version of the Eco Terra mattress ranks around a 7 out of 10 and the medium ranks about a 5.5 out of 10 on the firmness scale. The bed will initially feel very plush as you interact with the latex, but the springs will kick in and support you. Sleepers tend to feel they are sleeping “in” not “on” the bed, but the springy latex and coils should prevent the feeling of being trapped in quicksand.

The mattress ships to all 48 states in the contiguous U.S. It is available for purchase through the official Eco Terra website or through Amazon.

eco terra mattress construction

The Eco Terra mattress has an organic stretch cotton cover that wicks moisture and feels soft to the touch.

The top layer is 3 inches thick and made of sustainably sourced single-origin 100% natural Arpico Talalay latex. Talalay latex has a buoyant, airy feeling and most sleepers will find this layer provides cushy pressure relief.

Previous versions of the mattress had a layer of polyurethane foam but Eco Terra has replaced this with a thin layer of wool. Wool is recognized as one of the best natural materials for temperature regulation and will wick away heat and moisture as you sleep.

The base layer contains pocketed Quantum coils made from upcycled steel and individually wrapped with non-woven, non-toxic, food-grade polypropylene fabric. These have been heat-treated and stress-relieved. The mattress has a high coil count (1,057 in the queen) for better durability. It also has 15-gauge coils in the center and narrower 16-gauge coils on the edges to provide reinforced edge support.

The cotton and wool used in the Eco Terra mattress are certified 100% organic by the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS). The latex and wool carry the OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certification, and the latex is free of harmful substances as certified by ECO-INSTITUT. The Eco Terra mattress contains no polyurethanes, chemicals, or toxins.

The mattress stands at 11 inches tall in total.

The Eco Terra ships for free within the continental U.S. The mattress ships with UPS Ground and should arrive within 3-7 days after you place your order. The mattress is shipped shrink-wrapped and rolled into a box. To assemble the mattress, cut open the box, carefully slice open the plastic wrap, and unroll the mattress where you want to install it. The mattress will immediately regain its original shape and will be ready for sleeping on right away.

Additional Service

Eco Terra offers optional White Glove delivery for $299 and optional old mattress removal for $150, or both for a combined price of $399.

Sleep Trial

The Eco Terra comes with a 90-night sleep trial during which you can return it for a full refund if you decide it’s not for you. Returns are free. Just box the mattress for shipping, leave it on your curb, and the company will come to pick up the mattress at no cost to you. White-glove delivery fees and other extra shipping fees are not refundable. Damaged or soiled mattresses will not be refunded.

Eco Terra does impose a 30-night break-in period to let your body adjust to the mattress before making your final decision. If you wish to return the mattress before these 30 nights are up, Eco Terra will charge a $99 convenience fee.

The 90-day sleep trial only applies to the person who originally purchased the mattress through the website. Mattresses purchased through Amazon will have a 30-night sleep trial and will be processed by Amazon instead. Please refer to Amazon’s return policy for more details.

Eco Terra guarantees the bed against manufacturing defects with a 15-year non-prorated warranty, under which Eco Terra will repair or replace the mattress at the company’s discretion. To qualify for the warranty you must use the bed with a proper foundation and frame and rotate the mattress occasionally to avoid compression. Stains, burns, jumping on the bed, and other signs of abuse or misuse will void the warranty.

The warranty covers manufacturing defects in the mattress including indentations of more than 1 ½ inches. The warranty only applies to the original purchaser of the mattress. For more information on the warranty, click here.

Eco Terra Mattress Performance

Motion Isolation

The Eco Terra mattress is fairly bouncy, but the individually wrapped coils will go a long way towards isolating motion so it doesn’t transfer to the other side of the bed. This is especially important if you’re sharing the bed with a pet or a partner.

Edge Support

The thinner-gauge coils around the edge of the mattress do a good job of providing enhanced edge support. Most people should have no trouble sleeping or sitting on the edge of the bed. The mattress’s superior edge support also makes it a good choice for people with mobility issues who have trouble getting in and out of bed. The medium-firm option will have even better edge support thanks to the firmer latex in the comfort layer. Even bigger people should be able to sleep on the edge of the bed, although perhaps not sit on it.

Heat Retention

If you tend to sleep hot, you’ll be glad to know the Eco Terra mattress does a great job at regulating temperature. The mattress has a breathable cover, and there is excellent airflow through the coil layer. Although some latex mattresses are known to trap heat, Talalay latex is aerated and is recognized as being better than Dunlop latex for breathability. The wool layer also helps regulate the temperature.

You shouldn’t expect any off-gassing smells with the Eco Terra mattress, as it’s made of mostly natural materials and doesn’t contain any polyurethane foams or chemicals. The mattress uses a natural organic wool fire barrier with no chemical flame retardants.

The vast majority of customers report no smell at all. Some people report a very faint scent upon unpacking, which quickly dissipates. This is possibly from the latex, or the polypropylene fabric, or just from being shrink-wrapped in plastic.

The individually pocketed coils in the Eco Terra mattress should provide tailored support for the different parts of your body, compressing accordingly in response to pressure. This will help promote proper spinal alignment, no matter your sleeping position.

Talalay latex is a light, airy material that will conform fairly closely to the curves of your body to provide pressure relief. The medium version of the Eco Terra mattress will contour more closely than the medium-firm version, but both mattresses should form a cradle to reduce pressure points in most sleepers and help align the spine so the coils can provide the right support.

Latex is quick to regain its original shape once pressure is no longer being applied. If you want a bed that contours but you don’t like the feeling of sinking into the bed, latex is a good alternative to memory foam.

The materials used to make the Eco Terra mattress generally enjoy an above-average lifespan compared to other common mattress materials.

Latex is known for its longevity and the latex in the Eco Terra mattress is all-natural and seamless, with no chemical adhesives. Pocketed coils don’t have the advantage of being connected to each other to distribute weight more evenly, so there is the possibility of them not lasting as long as some other types of innerspring mattresses. However, the coils are heat-treated and stress-relieved and the mattress has a high coil count. All of these measures should help prolong the longevity of the support layer.

The best mattresses for sex will have some bounce, and the Eco Terra mattress outdoes itself in this regard. Both the latex and the pocketed coil layers are highly resilient, making this mattress more than suitable for sex, combination sleeping, or anything that involves moving around in bed.

Latex is excellent at muffling noise, but one downside of hybrid beds is that the coils can occasionally produce some squeaking. Because the Eco Terra uses pocketed coils the noise will be somewhat muffled, but if you’re a light sleeper you may be better off with a pure latex or all-foam bed.

What Type of Sleeper Is Well Suited to an Eco Terra Mattress?

Side Sleepers: Most side sleepers will prefer the medium Eco Terra mattress. The latex layer will provide plush contouring for most side sleepers, and the individually pocketed coils will cushion pressure points while providing support where needed. Lighter side sleepers might find that the mattress is too firm to provide adequate relief from pressure points, even with the medium option.

Back Sleepers: The latex should contour to provide lumbar support and cushioning for pressure points when sleeping on your back. Lighter back sleepers will probably get better contouring with the medium mattress, while average-weight and heavyweight individuals will be better off with the firmer support of the medium-firm mattress.

Stomach Sleepers: The medium-firm version of the Eco Terra mattress should be ideal for most stomach sleepers, who will find that it’s just the right amount of firm to keep the spine aligned while reducing pressure points.

Our Verdict

Sleeping on latex has been likened to sleeping on a cloud, and this weightless feeling is enhanced by the springiness of the coil layer in the Eco Terra mattress. The latex and pocketed coils work in tandem to alleviate pressure points while maintaining a firm cradle that will keep your spine properly supported.

The contouring pressure relief makes the Eco Terra luxury latex mattress particularly well-suited to side sleepers. With two firmness options to choose from, most sleepers should be able to find an Eco Terra mattress that works for them. The medium-firm option, in particular, gets positive reviews from people who suffer from back pain and other types of chronic pain.

Many allergy sufferers who have trouble sleeping on memory foam mattresses have found relief on this mattress thanks to the natural materials, and even some people who are sensitive to latex have had success.

The Eco Terra mattress is made from durable materials and is sold at a very competitive price point compared to other latex hybrids. If you’re partial to the familiar feel of a coil mattress but looking for something a step up from a traditional innerspring mattress, this hybrid mattress may be a good option.
