As one of the first companies to offer a bed in a box mattress, Casper has a well-established reputation in the mattress industry. The company launched in 2014 with its original Casper mattress. It has since expanded and redesigned its product line, in part due to the research and development of its own Casper Labs. Casper has dedicated researchers and engineers who have revamped the Casper mattress and designed the company’s next generation of products.

Nova Hybrid Mattress Layers

The latest Casper mattresses include the Element mattress, the Original mattress, the Nova mattress, and the Wave mattress. The Original and Nova models are available in both foam and hybrid constructions. For this review, we’ll be focusing on the new Casper Nova Hybrid mattress. The foam option is currently available through select retailers, and is not offered on the Casper website.

The Casper Nova Hybrid mattress has two layers of AirScapeTM foam, which add airflow throughout the mattress. Support comes from a zoned transition layer and a base of pocketed coils. The hybrid design relieves pressure points, regulates temperature, and helps keep the spine aligned. The Nova mattress is also Casper’s softest mattress model.

Our review breaks down the construction, firmness, and pricing of the Casper Nova Hybrid mattress. We include our recommendations and final verdict. For those unfamiliar with Casper, we review company information and policies at the bottom of the page.

Firmness

Casper describes the Nova Hybrid mattress as “cloud-like”. It’s the softest Casper mattress model, with a medium-soft feel. This falls at a 4 on the 1-10 firmness scale.

The softness of the mattress allows you to sink in for immediate pressure relief.

The combination of foam layers and a coil support base offer ample support for most sleeping positions and body types. The comfort system is zoned, so the mattress feels softer under the shoulders and firmer under the hips.

Availability

The Casper Nova Hybrid mattress is available through Casper, in-stores and online. Casper operates nationwide Casper Sleep Shops where you can try out Casper products. Casper’s website offers shipping to the United States and select international destinations.

In addition to Casper Sleep Shops, Casper partners with retailers. This includes Target, Home Outfitters, and Raymour and Flanigan. Some Casper mattresses are also available on Amazon.com.

Construction

The Casper Nova mattress has a hybrid construction with 5 layers. The soft, stretchy cover is made with eco-friendly textiles. This includes polyester from 70 recycled plastic bottles, cotton, rayon, and spandex.

caspernova

The comfort system includes two layers of Casper’s proprietary AirScapeTM polyfoam. The first one-inch layer of AirScapeTM is soft to relieve pressure points. The second 1.5″ layer has 3 ergonomic zones to keep the spine aligned. This includes a softer area under the shoulders and firmer support under the hips. Both layers are perforated to increase airflow throughout the mattress and dissipate heat.

The 2″ transition layer of memory foam has 7 support zones. This ensures the mattress provides top-notch support for the hips, abdomen, and lower back. This layer reinforces the comfort system above and prevents sinking in too deeply.

The support core of the Nova Hybrid mattress is 7″in total which includes 6″ of pocketed coils. The coils add airflow to the mattress and offer full-body support. A foam encasement around the coils adds support to the perimeter of the mattress. A layer of support foam below reinforces the coils.

All of the foams used are CertiPUR-US Certified, meaning they are low in volatile organic compounds and do not contain ozone-depleting chemicals.

Beneath the pillow top and foam comfort layers is a transition layer with micro-coils and polyfoam. The main support layer includes six inches of individually pocketed innerspring coils that offer responsive support and reduce motion transfer. The perimeter of the coil support layer is reinforced for additional edge support. The base of the mattress is one inch of high-density foam. The Hybrid mattress is CertiPUR-US and GREENGUARD Gold certified.

Casper Nova Hybrid Mattress Performance

Motion Isolation – Very Good

The Casper Nova mattress is highly rated for motion isolation. The soft, plush foam used in the Casper Nova Hybrid mattress absorbs movement and is slow to return to its original shape. This prevents motion from transferring across the bed.

Though hybrid mattresses transfer movement more than all-foam models, the Casper Nova Hybrid mattress has several components that allow it to perform better than average. The coils are individually encased, meaning they move and react to pressure individually. This allows the coil base to reduce motion transfer.

Couples who share the bed should not be disturbed by their partner’s movements.

Edge Support – Good

The Casper Nova Hybrid mattress has a supportive pocket coil base with a foam encasement. Firm foam around the perimeter of the mattress adds edge support. This makes it easier to get in and out of bed.

Though we would expect a soft mattress to have less edge support, the Nova Hybrid holds up under pressure. Those who sleep near the edge of the bed should feel supported.

Since the comfort layers include soft foam, you may notice the mattress compress a little when getting in and out of bed. However, the edge support in the mattress should help prevent sagging over time.

Heat Retention – Very Good

The Casper Nova Hybrid mattress conforms closely and has a soft feel. This would normally translate to sleeping hot, but the Nova Hybrid takes measures to prevent heat retention.

The first two foam layers of the Nova mattress include perforated AirScape foam. These layers draw heat away from the body and circulate air throughout the mattress. Deep channels in the transition layer help dissipate heat and prevent it from building up in the mattress. The coil base adds airflow, too. Overall, the mattress has a temperature neutral feel.

Off-Gassing – Good

You may notice an initial odor when the Casper Nova mattress is first unboxed. This is to be expected of any mattress that has layers of synthetic foam, and is the result of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) being released. The Casper Nova Hybrid mattress is low in VOCs. Any off-gassing is not considered harmful. The odor should dissipate within a few days. Ensuring the bedroom is well-ventilated will help.

Support – Very Good

The Casper Nova Hybrid mattress offers robust support for most body types and sleeping positions. The Zoned SupportTM Pro system provides ergonomic support that keeps the spine aligned. This system includes 7 zones in the transition layer to cushion the shoulders and support the lower back, abdomen and hips. Firmer support underneath the hips prevents sinking in too deeply.

The coils in the support base are pocketed and responsive, making the hybrid model more supportive than the Nova foam mattress.

Conforming – Very Good

The Casper Nova Hybrid mattress has a medium soft feel. Airscape foam relieves pressure points and contours to the shape of your body. The zoned foam layers cushion the shoulders while supporting the hips.

It should be noted that the Nova mattress uses polyfoam instead of memory foam. As a result, it does not provide the body-hugging feel of traditional memory foam.

Since the mattress is softer at the shoulders, it is great for side sleepers. It prevents pressure from building up and reduces aches and pains.

Durability – Very Good

Since the Casper Nova Hybrid mattress is new, we can’t speak to how it has performed over a long period of time. That said, we expect it to have above-average durability based on the materials and construction of the mattress. Casper has a proven track record and continually improves the design and construction of its products.

The coil support core contributes to the durability of the mattress and ensures the mattress will provide consistent support. The dense foam used in the perimeter and base of the mattress prevent sagging over time.

Additionally, the Casper Nova Hybrid mattress is covered by a 10-year warranty that protects it against any defects in materials and workmanship.

Sex – Good

Since the Casper Nova mattress is medium soft, it compresses when pressure is applied. The foam layers provide traction, which can be beneficial for sex.

The coils in the support base add bounce to the mattress and help facilitate movement. This makes it easy to change positions as needed. The Nova mattress has good edge support, so couples can comfortably use the entire surface area of the bed. It’s also discreet, as the coils and foam layers make minimal noise when bearing weight.

That being said, the mattress may be too soft for some couples.

Noise – Very Good

The Casper Nova Hybrid is nearly silent when bearing weight. The thick foam comfort system does not make any noise.

As with any hybrid or innerspring mattress, the coils may make some noise when bearing weight. This is minimized in the Nova mattress because each coil is individually encased.

The coils are also surrounded by foam. There is a polyfoam base beneath the coils, along with a foam encasement around the perimeter and the comfort layers above.

What Type of Sleeper is Well-Suited to a Casper Nova Hybrid Mattress?

The Casper Nova Hybrid mattress is suitable for most sleeping positions and body types. Since it has a medium soft feel, we recommend it more for side sleepers and back sleepers. When determining if a mattress is right for you, it is important to take your sleeping position, body type, and comfort preferences into consideration. These can affect how much support and comfort the mattress provides.

Side Sleepers: Side sleepers usually prefer a soft to medium soft mattress. Their hips and shoulders press into the mattress, so ample cushioning prevents pressure points from developing. The contouring foams and plush feel of the Casper Nova Hybrid mattress relieve pressure on the shoulders. Additionally, two of the foam layers have ergonomic zones that cushion the shoulders and support the hips. The Nova mattress was designed with side sleepers in mind, and is rated very highly by side sleepers who weigh less than 230 pounds.

Back Sleepers: Back sleepers maintain a neutral posture as they sleep, but benefit from a contouring mattress to keep their spine aligned. The zoned layers of the Casper Nova Hybrid mattress support the lumbar region to keep the spine aligned. The coil support base is responsive and supportive. Each layer works together to relieve pressure on the spine and prevent back pain.

Stomach Sleepers: Stomach sleepers usually benefit from a medium firm to firm mattress, especially if they weigh more than 230 pounds. A firm mattress prevents the hips from pressing into the mattress and pushing the spine out of alignment. That being said, the Casper Nova Hybrid mattress offers good support for stomach sleepers who weigh less than 230 pounds. The supportive coils and zoned foam layers keep the hips and abdomen from sinking in.
