Simmons has been making mattresses for almost a century. Founded in the 1870s, the mattress manufacturer has seen the industry through many of its major revolutions and recently merged with Serta, another mattress giant. Simmons is now focusing on rebranding itself as a modern competitor, a move reflected in its 2018 merger with Tuft & Needle. The Simmons Beautyrest Hybrid mattress is one of a few select mattresses that Simmons is offering for purchase online in order to compete with the quickly growing bed-in-a-box industry.
The Beautyrest mattress lineup has been notoriously complicated in the past, with multiple models and multiple options within those models. This year the company is streamlining its approach to make it more consumer-friendly. While there are several different Beautyrest Hybrid models, this article will focus on the Beautyrest Hybrid that is exclusively available online and offers a one-size-fits-all approach.
The Beautyrest Hybrid mattress features an even balance of gel memory foam and pocketed coils. It’s 13.5 inches tall and comes in just one firmness level, around a 5 out of 10 on the firmness scale. This is the more affordable alternative to the Beautyrest Black line, also available online and customizable within three different comfort and cooling levels.
We’ll take a closer look at the layers that make up the mattress and discuss what types of sleepers might be best-suited to this model.

Depending on your body type, sleeping position, and other factors, you may prefer your mattress to be softer or harder. Mattress firmness is a matter of personal preference and there’s no universal firmness level that works for everyone, although the vast majority of people prefer a mattress that’s medium-firm.
The Beautyrest Hybrid comes in just one firmness option: medium, or about a 5 out of 10 with 10 being the firmest. The mattress is a little on the plush side, which makes it best-suited to side sleepers of average weight. Back sleepers may also find this mattress quite comfortable.
Many people find that the Beautyrest Hybrid is initially quite firm and then softens up considerably over the first month or two. It’s worth taking advantage of the full sleep trial before deciding if this firmness level is right for you.
Currently, this model of the Beautyrest Hybrid mattress is only available through the official Simmons website. The mattress is sold in all 48 continental U.S. states but is not available for purchase in Alaska or Hawaii.
The Beautyrest Hybrid mattress is 13.5 inches tall, which is slightly taller than the average mattress. In the top comfort layer is 1 inch of contouring Beautyrest® Gel Memory Foam, followed by another 2 inches of Beautyrest® Gel Memory Foam. The comfort layers feature Simmons’ ContourFit™ design, which adapts to your body shape.
Under the memory foam is 1 inch of medium comfort foam, which acts as a transition to the coils underneath. In the base of the bed is a 1000 Series Firm Pocketed Coil® support layer. The individually wrapped coils provide targeted spinal support where it’s most needed. Since the coils function independently of each other, they also help reduce motion transfer. This will be especially important to people who sleep with a partner.
The edges of the mattress are reinforced with Simmons’ proprietary BeautyEdge® system, a polyfoam border that provides a firm perimeter for sitting or sleeping on.
The cover of the Beautyrest Hybrid mattress is made of a cool to the touch fabric that is stretchy enough not to impede the contouring qualities of the memory foam underneath.
The Beautyrest Hybrid mattress ships for free within the contiguous U.S. Shipping times may vary but generally take between 6-10 business days.
All Beautyrest Hybrid mattresses purchased directly through the Simmons website are shipped with complimentary White Glove delivery and old mattress removal, in partnership with XPO Logistics. After you order your mattress, the company will reach out to schedule a delivery window that works for you.
The Beautyrest Hybrid mattress comes with a 100-night sleep trial. If you decide the mattress isn’t for you before the 100 nights are up, just contact Beautyrest. They will come to pick it up, recycle it, and give you a full refund.
The Beautyrest Hybrid mattress is backed by a 10-year limited warranty that guarantees it against defective materials and workmanship, provided the mattress has been used with a sufficiently supportive frame/foundation and has not been stained or otherwise abused. Simmons recommends using a box spring for best results.
The warranty does not cover normal softening of the comfort layers. Click here for more warranty details.
Beautyrest Hybrid Mattress Performance
When you’re able to move around in bed without your movements affecting your partner’s side of the bed, that mattress is said to have good motion isolation. A direct example of this is Simmons’ 1995 bowling ball commercial, which showed a bowling ball being dropped onto a Beautyrest mattress without disturbing the bowling pins next to it.
Simmons was the first mattress manufacturer to successfully mass-produce pocketed coils, which prevent the motion transfer that tends to occur with traditional innerspring mattresses. As you might expect, today’s Beautyrest Hybrid also performs well on motion isolation. This is partly thanks to its pocketed coils and partly thanks to the memory foam layers, which also absorb a significant amount of motion.
Without reinforced edge support, most mattresses will sag underneath you when you put weight on the edges. This reduces the sleeping surface and can make it difficult or impossible to sit on the edge of the bed.
The Beautyrest Hybrid has several inches of memory foam in the comfort layers, which will compress noticeably when you put pressure on them. However, the pocketed coils and BeautyEdge® polyfoam border should help reinforce the edges enough for most purposes.
Memory foam is notorious for trapping heat, which makes it understandably unpopular with people who live in warm climates or those who naturally sleep hot.
Simmons uses gel memory foam in the Beautyrest Hybrid mattress to help draw heat away from the body. The coils also leave plenty of room for airflow, which will allow some heat to escape.
Since the mattress does conform quite closely to your body, this won’t be the coolest mattress on the market. However, Simmons has succeeded in providing a fairly neutral sleeping experience considering the mattress has such a thick layer of memory foam.
The foams used in the Beautyrest Hybrid mattress are CertiPur-US certified and free of formaldehyde, ozone depleters, and other harmful chemicals. You shouldn’t notice any significant odors with the Beautyrest Hybrid mattress.
One of the most important things to look for in a mattress is whether it provides enough support. Without proper support, your spine will be thrown out of alignment and you will wake up stiff and sore.
The pocketed coils in the Beautyrest Hybrid mattress are designed to adapt to your body’s curves, providing support where needed to maintain proper spinal alignment.
Memory foam is known for its ability to provide close contouring in response to heat and pressure. With 3 inches of gel memory foam in its top layers, the Beautyrest Hybrid should do a good job of conforming to your body and reducing pressure points in sensitive areas like the hips and shoulders.
Simmons has had some complaints in terms of durability, especially regarding sagging. Since the company doesn’t disclose the specifications of its foams, it’s difficult to say whether the Beautyrest Hybrid will suffer from this problem.
A material is said to be resilient when it quickly regains its shape after pressure is no longer being applied to it. Resilient mattresses are favored by combination sleepers who want to easily change sleeping positions without feeling like they are sunk into the bed. Most people also find that a resilient surface is more conducive to sex.
The Beautyrest Hybrid has a support layer made of coils, which will provide some bounce. However, the thick layers of memory foam will reduce the responsiveness of the mattress.
A mattress that squeaks and creaks all night long can be annoying. Foam mattresses tend to be virtually silent, but innerspring mattresses are generally on the squeakier end. The Beautyrest Hybrid is a blend of both materials, so it falls somewhere in between.
While this mattress does have coils, they are individually wrapped in fabric. In combination with the memory foam, this will muffle much of the sound when compared with a traditional innerspring mattress.

What Type of Sleeper Is Well Suited to a Beautyrest Hybrid Mattress?
Side Sleepers: Side sleepers will usually feel most comfortable on a mattress that allows the hips and shoulders to sink into the mattress to cradle those pressure points, without sinking in so far as to affect spinal alignment. The memory foam layers in the Beautyrest Hybrid will do an excellent job of cushioning the hips and shoulders, while the pocket coils underneath will provide support where needed.
Back Sleepers: Back sleepers tend to prefer a mattress that provides a balance of support and pressure relief. Most back sleepers should find that the pocketed coils in the Beautyrest Hybrid provide good support under the lumbar area. Meanwhile, the memory foam comfort layers will help provide a cradle to promote proper spinal alignment. This makes the Beautyrest Hybrid a good option for back sleepers.
Stomach Sleepers: The Beautyrest Hybrid falls on the softer side as far as mattresses go, and stomach sleepers may find that the plush comfort layers allow their hips to sink in a tad too far. This can throw off spinal alignment and cause back pain.

About Simmons Beautyrest
Customer Service: Beautyrest has only recently branched into the online mattress industry, so it remains to be seen how the customer service department will handle concerns specific to this area. So far the company has set up a helpline specifically targeted to addressing concerns related to its online mattresses, which is a good start.
Reputation: Simmons (and Serta) is a giant in the mattress industry and consistently ranks among the leading mattress manufacturers in the U.S. With the recent shift towards consumer-friendly marketing in the mattress world, Simmons is undergoing a major overhaul of its branding principles. It will be interesting to see whether the company can successfully transition to a modern player in the online mattress industry.
BBB Rating: Simmons has an A+ rating from the Better Business Bureau. The company has been BBB-accredited since 2014.
Years in Business: Simmons was founded in 1870. The company started working together with Serta in 2010 and has operated under the name Serta Simmons Bedding since 2016.
Physical Stores: Simmons Beautyrest mattresses can be found in several authorized brick-and-mortar mattress retailers. The Beautyrest Hybrid model covered in this review is currently only available for purchase from the Simmons Beautyrest website, although it has been displayed in the Tuft & Needle showroom.
Simmons has taken the plunge into the online mattress industry, but so far the company is cautiously releasing a limited range of products for sale online. This Beautyrest Hybrid model is among the most basic of the current Beautyrest Hybrid lineup, and that’s reflected in the price tag.
With the Beautyrest Hybrid, Simmons has created a mattress that should appeal to a wide range of sleeping profiles. It doesn’t have the sophisticated support or cooling systems of the more expensive Beautyrest mattresses, but the Beautyrest Hybrid should do just fine at providing all-round support with its pocketed coils. Couples will also appreciate the superior motion isolation provided by the individually wrapped coils.
The Beautyrest Hybrid mattress is particularly well-suited to side sleepers, with its thick layers of memory foam that conform to the body and ease strain on pressure points. We typically recommend heavier individuals choose mattresses with a coil support system, and as expected, the pocketed coils in this mattress should provide decent support for sleepers in most weight profiles.
While this may not be the most sophisticated mattress ever produced by Simmons, it’s a solid choice for most sleepers who want a quality mattress at an affordable price point. The free White Glove delivery and old mattress removal are a nice touch. It looks like the Beautyrest Hybrid mattress will be a worthy competitor for other online-only hybrid mattresses.
