Nectar launched in 2017. Despite being relatively new to the market, it has quickly become one of the biggest names in the bed-in-a-box industry. Saatva has been in the mattress business for longer, having launched in 2011. During this time, it has also built a strong name for itself selling mattresses online.

Nectar’s only mattress is its flagship offering, the Nectar. Saatva manufactures several different mattresses, including the Saatva innerspring mattress, the Loom & Leaf memory foam mattress, and the Zenhaven latex mattress. For the sake of this comparison, we will focus on each company’s flagship offering: the Nectar and the Saatva. The Nectar comes in one firmness, while the Saatva offers three firmness options.

The Nectar mattress and the Saatva mattress share some similarities, so you might struggle to decide between the two. Assessing the mattresses’ constructions, firmnesses, sleep experiences, and other product information can help you see the differences that set them apart.

Mattress Construction Comparison

Nectar

The Nectar mattress is an 11-inch tall mattress composed of four distinct foam layers.

The cover of the mattress is composed of Tencel, which is designed to pull away heat and promote airflow. The top layer of the Nectar mattress is composed of 1 inch of quilted gel memory foam designed to offer contouring and comfort. It is also designed to promote air circulation to help regulate body temperature.

The mattress’s second layer uses 3 inches of semi-open Lush Foam. This gel memory foam has a density of 3.5 pounds per cubic foot (PCF). It is intended to distribute your body weight evenly, offer contouring, and redistribute heat.

The third layer is composed of 1.75 inches of Adaptive Hi Core Memory Foam. This layer is designed to provide additional responsiveness and bounce while offering additional contouring and pressure point relief.

The base layer of the Nectar mattress uses 5.25 inches of support foam with a density of 2.2 PCF. This layer is both dense and breathable, with molded channels to allow greater airflow. The base layer is designed to reinforce the contouring of the upper layers while providing a stable foundation.

Saatva

The Saatva is an innerspring mattress. It comes in two height options: 11.5 inches and 14.5 inches. The cover of the Saatva mattress is composed of organic cotton. The top layer of the mattress is a Euro pillow top, which offers cushioning.

The second layer features 4 inches of individually-wrapped, 14.5-gauge coils. These comfort coils are designed to provide contouring and allow airflow without transferring motion excessively.

Next, back support enhancements provide support and contouring where you need it most. Active wire Lumbar Zone technology and a memory foam layer pair to offer added support and contouring for the middle of the mattress and lower back.

The support layer of the mattress uses 13-gauge coils connected in an hourglass pattern. This layer is designed to be strong, durable, and breathable. The height of this support layer is 4 inches in the 11.5-inch model and 7 inches in the 14.5-inch model.

Firmness Comparison

Firmness, how soft or hard a mattress feels, is one of the key factors that determine how comfortable a mattress feels to an individual. The right firmness can not only promote a comfortable night’s sleep, but it can also encourage proper spinal alignment.

The firmness of a mattress is determined by its construction and materials. Materials like foam have a reputation for being soft. However, they can be layered to produce firmer mattresses.

Firmness is usually rated on a 10-point scale. Low numbers are assigned to softer mattresses, while higher numbers are assigned to firmer mattresses.

Firmness preferences vary between sleepers, so what feels perfect to someone else may feel perfect to you. Most sleepers prefer mattresses that are medium or medium-firm, usually around 5-7 on the scale. Sleepers who weigh less than 130 pounds or who like a plush feel may prefer softer mattresses. Sleepers who weigh more than 230 pounds or who enjoy a firmer feel may favor firmer mattresses.

The Nectar ranks around a 6 on the firmness scale, so it can be considered medium firm. This firmness should feel acceptable for a wide range of sleep styles and preferences.

The Saatva mattress comes in three firmness options, which it calls Plush Soft, Luxury Firm, and Firm. These options rate around 3, 5-7, and 8 respectively. These ratings could be considered soft, medium or medium firm, and firm.  Because the Saatva offers three firmness options, most sleepers should be able to find a Saatva mattress that fits their firmness preferences.

Sleep Experience

Sleep experience takes into account multiple factors that contribute to the quality and comfort of your sleep. While the Nectar mattress and the Saatva mattress share some similarities in sleep experience, there are also some major differences. Comparing the two mattresses on multiple factors that affect sleep experience can give you more insight to make the right decision for you.

Temperature Control

If you tend to sleep hot, temperature control may be a major factor in your mattress decision.

Memory foam has a reputation for sleeping hot. The Nectar offers unique features to dissipate heat. The Nectar mattress’s comfort layer uses gel memory foam that aims to provide cooling, while the Tencel cover allows airflow. The second layer of the mattress features semi-open Lush Foam, which is designed to redistribute heat. The Nectar’s support layer uses molded channels to allow for greater airflow than most all-foam mattresses.

The Saatva mattress uses an innerspring system, which allows greater airflow than most foam mattresses. Airflow can help regulate your body temperature and keep you cooler throughout the night.

Both the Nectar mattress and the Saatva mattress can provide a cooler night’s sleep than many other mattresses.

Motion Transfer

Motion transfer occurs when the movement of one partner is felt across the surface of the bed. If you have a partner who tosses and turns, excessive motion transfer may disturb you during the night.

The Nectar mattress’s all-foam construction offers excellent motion isolation. Since foam absorbs motion, you may barely notice when your partner moves.

The Saatva mattress uses two coil layers. The top coil layer uses individually-wrapped coils, which should be able to isolate motion. The base layer uses coils that are connected to in an hourglass pattern. Since these coils are connected, the movement of one may be felt across the bed. Because of this, the Nectar mattress may offer superior motion isolation to the Saatva mattress.

Responsiveness

Responsiveness is how a mattress adjusts to your body shape to relieve pressure points and promote spinal alignment. When a mattress is responsive, it will allow heavier body parts to sink in, which can help promote better spinal alignment.

The Nectar mattress features two layers of memory foam, which can allow the right parts of your body to sink in. This contouring can relieve pressure points while promoting alignment.

The Saatva mattress features Lumbar Zone technology and a memory foam layer to offer extra support and contouring in the middle of the mattress to help align the lower back.

Both the Nectar mattress and the Saatva mattress can offer enough responsiveness to provide contouring and promote alignment.

Resilience and Bounce

Since memory foam absorbs motion, it often lacks the bounce of a traditional innerspring mattress. The Nectar mattress’s layer of Adaptive Hi Core Memory Foam is designed to provide bounce, which can make it easier to change position or engage in sexual activity on the bed.

The Saatva mattress uses an innerspring system, which is more conducive to bounce and resilience. Therefore, the Saatva may be the better option if you want a mattress that’s easier to move around on.

Edge Support

A lack of edge support can cause the perimeter of the bed to compress when weight is applied, which can make it difficult to sit or sleep close to the edge of the bed.

The Nectar mattress lacks reinforced edges. However, the dense foam layers might make the edges feel somewhat more stable than many other foam mattresses.

The Saatva mattress uses a Dual Perimeter edge support system. A foam encasement around the perimeter of the innerspring layers provides extra support, making it easier to sit and sleep closer to the edge. Because Saatva offers a reinforced edge, it may be a better choice for sleepers looking for good edge support.

Off-gassing and Smell

Mattresses may emit a slight odor when first introduced to your home. This odor isn’t harmful. When left in a well-ventilated room, it should dissipate within a few hours to a few days. Like other mattresses, both the Nectar mattress and the Saatva mattress may have a mild odor at first, but it should dissipate quickly.
