Helix Mattress Review
Editor’s Rating – 9/10
Most customers assume they have to do all the work to find the right mattress. For the Helix, it’s the opposite: the company tailors the mattress to you.
The Helix mattress is a hybrid that is built with several layers of different types of foam as well as a layer of micro-coils for additional bounce and resilience. Each mattress is customized using a proprietary algorithm that uses answers to questions on a sleep quiz about body type, sleep habits, and other preferences. This algorithm determines the characteristics of the foam layers, giving this mattress the ability to be firm or soft, more or less contouring, and generally a better fit for what you need.

How is the Helix Mattress Built?
The Helix mattress has 4 layers that are underneath a stretch fabric cover. These 4 layers include:
- Top layer: 2″ of Helix Dynamic Foam, a specialized polyfoam.
- Second layer: 2″ of transition polyfoam.
- Third layer: 2″ of individually-pocketed micro-coils
- Fourth layer: 4″ of support polyfoam with a density of 1.8 PCF
The company does not disclose specific details about the foams in large part because the details may vary based on the customization of the mattress. We would prefer if the density were specific for all layers, but the overall quality of the foams appears to be relatively high.
The Helix Dynamic Foam is designed to blend the contouring features of memory foam with the springiness of latex. Beneath the transition foam, having a thin layer of coils, known as micro-coils, increases the resilience, or bounce, of the mattress, although not to the same extent as a thicker layer of coils.
Comfort and Firmness
The firmness level of each Helix mattress is tailored to the individual shopper based on the results of the online sleep quiz. The sleep quiz takes numerous factors into account, including your firmness preference, current mattress, height, weight, and sleeping position. Using these factors, the firmness level is determined. They also use these factors to try to make sure that the mattress can provide the proper amount of hug so that you feel welcomed by your mattress without feeling stuck in it.
The customization of the Helix mattress helps to ensure that it is a supportive mattress, meaning that is provides the right amount of cushioning so that your neck, back, and hips are all in proper alignment. By knowing about your body type, sleeping position, and sleep habits, they can build the mattress to be more or less responsive. This contouring can reduce issues at your main pressure points that could prevent proper spinal alignment and lead to back pain and soreness.

- Edge Support 80%

One area where the Helix mattress may have issues is with edge support. There is no specific mechanism for reinforced edge support in the mattress, and many foam comfort layers tend to collapse more along the edges. This can be expected to be a more significant issue if you opt for a softer, plush version of the mattress as this will make the foam at the edges more likely to sink when weight is applied there.
How does it handle motion? Is it responsive?
The Helix mattress can be customized for couples, which means that steps can be taken in the building of the mattress to help make sure that it does not have significant issues with motion transfer. In general, the type of foam that is in the comfort layer is above-average at motion isolation. It’s not as effective at this as traditional memory foam, but it is sufficient for most people.
The bed is also quite responsive as the Helix Dynamic Foam is built to try to attain the type of cushioning and hug from memory foam but without the drawbacks of that material. The level of responsiveness will also depend in large part on your specific responses to the questions on the sleep quiz.
Does it regulate temperature? Does it sleep hot?
One of the questions on the sleep quiz relates to your normal sleeping temperature, which allows Helix to adjust your mattress to help it sleep cooler if that is an issue for you. In general, this will mean a mattress that is a bit firmer and with less contouring as this can cause the airflow around the body to be restricted. In addition, a polyfoam comfort layer generally does not retain heat to the same extent as traditional memory foams.
Is there a smell?
It is rare for customers to report any major issues with a smell from the Helix mattress. When it’s brand new, you may notice some slight odor, but this will go away within hours or, at most, a few days, if the mattress is kept in a well-ventilated room.
How durable is it?
Durability is one issue that is hard to judge conclusively for the Helix mattress. Because we do not know the specific density of the top foam layers, it is hard to know from those materials how well the mattress is likely to age. Furthermore, since the company has only been in business since 2015, we do not have long-term data from actual customers who have used the mattress for 5 years or more.
What Do Helix Customers Think?
Who is the Helix mattress best suited for?
As this mattress can be customized to have a wide range of different comfort levels and amounts of contouring, it can be a viable option for almost any sleeper. Side, back, and stomach sleepers, for example, can all have this mattress tailored to the type of contouring and support they need. This mattress may also be especially useful for couples, who can get a mattress custom built for their preferences, and for people who feel that they have very specific needs and desires in a new mattress.
Helix Mattress Review – Conclusion
Though it has only been on the market for a few years, the Helix mattress has nonetheless shown tremendous promise in providing a top-notch sleeping experience for customers. For some shoppers, it can feel like a challenge to determine which mattress is right for them, and Helix turns this equation around by putting great effort into making sure their mattress is right for you. You might expect this kind of customization to put this mattress into a much higher price range, but it is comparable in price to many other foam and hybrid options, making it a great choice for a wide variety of sleepers.
